So this week has been busy, very busy, even today we are very busy, so I will try to keep this short because I soon must go, We taught close to 40 lessons this week, had a Zone Training Meeting, and cooked some delicious meals.
On Monday last week we went to a museum near the place we stay. It's a really cool museum and we got to pay resident prices because of our residency cards, score for working permits! 100ksh ($1.12) compared to 500ksh ($5.60). The museum had some cool exhibits, they had crocodiles, huge crocodiles! I definitely wouldn't want to be death rolled by those things! They look much like dinosaurs.. They also had a really cool snake park with tons of snakes, the scariest ones would definitely have to be the brown rock pythons. They were massive and moving a lot! Snakes here are crazy, and they have all sorts of snakes in the bushes here so we avoid them. I guess at the golf course there is a place that if the ball goes there, then they don't retrieve it because of the snakes...
Tuesday we had our Zone Training Meeting which really turned out great. It was really powerful and the spirit was really strong. We have been doing trainings in more of a council compared to just lectures, and it is really helping a lot, much more participation. We trained on the topics that we had discussed in the recent MLC (Mission Leadership Conference). I know that if we all apply them, the zone will really progress. Having the Horners (our senior couple in the area) present with us is a blessing. It adds a level of maturity to the zone that young missionaries are unable to do. So all those out there debating whether to serve senior missions or not, do it, it's definitely needed, we could even use you here in Kenya. On Tuesday, we were teaching some less-actives after sending the Busia Elders back to Busia and we received a call that they needed to return for interviews on Wednesday, so they returned again on Wednesday morning so that Elder Ntsele and I could be interviewed via skype with President Hicken.
Wednesday was our interview with President Hicken. It's definitely a different feeling being interviewed over skype, but it turned out well, Totally new experience, but due to the digital age we live in, the doors are open to be able to use the technology for our benefit. After the interviews we sent Busia on their way again and then taught a man named George. He was powerful! Reminded me a ton of Robin Williams, just African. I meet tons of look-a-likes here in Kenya. Then we went and visited less actives with Brother Michael.
Thursday was a busy day of teaching. We were teaching with Brother Daniel who is preparing for his mission. He was powerful to work with. We had many awesome teaching experiences with him. On the way back from an area, he wanted us to tract a certain house and we agreed, went and knocked, found two ladies sleeping on the couches. They woke up and invited us in, we had a powerful lesson with them and they agreed to have us come again this next week.
Friday we had a powerful weekly planning which took most of the morning and then we were going to teach a female investigator and had tried by all means to get a member present, but no one was available. We needed a male to come with us because we are not supposed to teach sisters without another male present. Well the Lord answered our prayers and opened up a way and when we got there, she had brought over two guys for us to teach with her. It was really awesome, a definite miracle. That night we cooked and ate cow tongue. It was delicious! Tastes just like roast beef! We made nacho type things with it.
Saturday was a very busy day as usual. We had a total of 12 lessons on Saturday and we were traveling all over the place, just like last week, from one edge of the area to the area and stopping in between to teach as well, but the teaching turned out really great and we had a lot of success.
Sunday we watched General Conference at church, wow this conference was powerful! The talks were really amazing, for all those who haven't seen them or read them yet, I definitely recommend you look into it. Powerful! I really loved Elder M. Russell. Ballards talk "Stay in the Boat and Hold On!", everyone should read it and apply it.
After church, a member took us to visit less actives. We went into the total swamp lands to visit her. It was really a cool place. They say there are hippos and snakes and crocs out in the swamp. She is a really nice lady, she is living in really rough circumstances, and has been very sick. It's very sad to see, but inspiring when hearing their stories of faith and trust in the Lord to help them make it through their trials. For dinner we had nothing else to eat at the house, so we cooked up the remaining chicken necks that we had...made a very nice chicken noodle soup!
Well thats all I have time for, love you all, thank you for everything!
Love Elder Rushton Jay Hiltbrand
